AVHS Announces ExCEL Award Nominees

Apple Valley High School is proud to announce its nominees for the 2020-21 Minnesota State High School League ExCEL (Excellence in Community, Education, and Leadership) award. The ExCEL award is a unique recognition program designed exclusively for Minnesota high school juniors who are active in school activities, leaders in their schools, and who demonstrate a strong commitment to community service.

AVHS’s nominees are:

Ryan Cordella

Ryan Cardella, son of Lisa and Thomas Cardella. Ryan is a letter-winner in both football and baseball at AVHS. He is also a member of the school’s top choir, Valley Select Chorale. He spends his time working as an assistant coach for various Valley Athletic Association youth sports programs, and recently served as a group leader for youth baseball players at a Minnesota Twins Youth baseball camp. In addition to his co-curricular activities, Ryan excels academically, maintaining a high school GPA over 3.9.

Sarah McDevitt

Sarah McDevitt, daughter of Kim and John McDevitt. Sarah is a two-time letter winner in Tennis and Swimming. She is also a member of the school’s top band, the Wind Ensemble, where she serves as the section leader for the percussion section. She is also a member of the AVHS Math Team and AVHS chapter of National Honor Society. She has spent time in the last two years working as a tutor and peer helper in math and other subject areas around AVHS. She holds a perfect 4.0 GPA while taking a schedule of several high-level honors and AP courses.

Ryan and Sarah’s nominations are submitted to the high school league, where they are considered alongside nominations from high schools across Minnesota. State-level award recipients are announced on the MSHSL website on February 1, 2021. Good luck to Ryan and Sarah as they move forward in this process! We are proud to have the two of them representing AVHS.
